Business grants for women are a wonderful option for some women in business. Grants are an excellent source of funding because grants are not repaid. The funding is provided through government resources that have been budgeted for specific needs in our national community. Anyone is open to apply, so business grants for women are available to anyone regardless of gender, race, religion, or background.

The downside of grants is that business grants for women are not widely available. Rather, business grants for women are available only to select businesses and under very strict circumstances, mostly for research or development. Technologically-focused businesses, for example, will find it much easier to qualify for a grant than a craft or retail business. Still, because the money is readily available, even if your business is retail oriented, it may be of benefit to check into business grants for women available for various resources that could assist you in your business.

According to Denouement Solutions and Grants.gov, the United States government and its government organizations offer more 1000 grants totaling more than $400 billion in grant funding every year. Only 10 percent of citizens that qualify for these grants actually apply for grants, despite the fact that many more than that would qualify for a business grant for women. Therefore, even though not every individual or business is eligible for a business grant for women, it certainly can be beneficial to check into business grants for women.

According to grants.gov, the United States government’s web site and main resource for grants that are available and can be applied for, there are more than 1000 grant programs offered by the 26 Federal grant-making agencies. These programs fall into 21 different categories, as defined by the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance. While some agencies may list available grants under multiple grant categories, the Federal government lists these categories of grants as follows:

- Business and Commerce

- Community Development

- Consumer Protection

- Disaster Prevention and Relief

Even though the category of Business and Commerce may be what appears to have the largest selection of resources for business grants for women, consider the other categories as well, according to where your business falls. For example, if your business is a restaurant, don’t hesitate to check the Food and Nutrition category for grants currently available. If your business is a farm, check the Agriculture section.

Grants aren’t available for starting or opening a new business, and they also aren’t available for expanding on an existing business. However, business grants for women can offer funding for research or development of the business. Many grants may not be applicable to your particular business or needs, but there may be funds available for research, education, or other things needed for you to operate and improve your business to help you achieve business growth.

In general, when considering the options for a business grant for women, do your homework and read carefully. Look at all grants available that might be related to your particular business. Consider looking into the Business and Commerce section, of Grants.gov, as mentioned, and also look into the different categories of grant fundings. Take the time needed to read the grant qualifications carefully. With any business, check into the Regional Development category, as well as the Community Development category. Depending on your location within the United States, it’s possible to qualify for a grant to economically develop certain areas, and expanding a business in one of these areas can possibly assist you in qualifying for a business grant for women.

Additionally, consider applying for an educational grant if returning to school is an option you’d like to consider. Many grants for higher education are offered each year, and not all are awarded. Knowledge is an extremely valuable business tool, and because the money is readily available for those who qualify, and educational grant is an excellent option to consider as a business grant for women.

Like any seasoned pilot, you have an array of available tools to monitor your progress along the way. In grants language, they are called evaluation methods. They should be used throughout the life of your program: not only at the end of the grant term while evaluating whether or not you met your objectives but also while planning, writing the grant, and implementing the program. If you wait until the end, you risk finding out you have a problem without anytime to fix it. Using evaluation tools along the way allows you to make changes to ensure your program gets back on track for success.

There are two types of evaluation: goal-based evaluation and process monitoring. The first, goal-based evaluation is used chiefly to discern whether or not you have met your goals and objectives. It’s like the Welcome to O’Hare sign that lets the pilot know he has arrived in Chicago. The second type, process monitoring, aims to tell you whether or not the work you are doing is effectively moving you towards your goal. To the pilot, this is the radar screen that flashes when she falls off course.

The following six methods of evaluation can be used for either goal-based evaluation or process measurements, depending on when they are applied. For the sake of the examples, lets assume your grant-funded program is a health curriculum aimed at reducing childhood obesity.

1. Participant Questionnaires: Quite simply, ask participants whether or not they are enjoying a benefit from the program in a written evaluation or questionnaire. Ask them to fill out an evaluation. Administer a behavior survey before their participation and then offer the same survey as the program goes on. Compare the results to see if their behavior has changed. For example, ask students how many minutes of exercise they do each week. Ask them again eight weeks later to see if your program is making a difference.
2. Data Review: Look at measurable factors – anything that could indicate positive change such as body weight, body mass index, or even grades. (There is data that healthy kids perform better in school.)
3. Observation: Without letting your participants know, observe them and monitor their behavior. Record how many kids engage in physical activity during recess and watch whether or not this is increasing.
4. Interviews: Sit down with participants one-on-one and extract as much information from them as you can in an interview. This is different from a written survey because there is the opportunity for the students to offer additional information if prompted. They can also offer constructive criticism about the program and clarify anything that is unclear or confusing to the interviewer.
5. Focus Groups: Just like interviews, only the participants are in a group and can hear one another’s response. The benefit can be a synergistic effect that causes epiphanies that would not otherwise have reached. On the other hand, it may cause some participants to withhold honest responses, particularly with sensitive or potentially embarrassing topics, like weight among children.
6. Case study: Following an individual participant and record, in minute detail, the changes in their life that resulted from your program. For example, follow a male student with all odds against him: a history of family obesity, juvenile diabetes, and no understanding of why it is important to make healthy decisions. Imagine what a compelling success story it is when he is a healthy weight, understands healthy choices, and declares that he loves playing sport. While case studies are never a sufficient measure of overall programmatic success, they certainly have a place in persuading grant funders that you are making a difference by changing lives.

When you are writing a grant application, you should describe in detail how you plan on using and or all of the six evaluation and progress monitoring tools listed above. This will show funders that you are committed to periodically checking the course that your program is on and making the necessary adjustments to navigate it towards success.

They announce government grants in an e-book for you to buy, but they only give you half the information. A Good Business Plan

A good plan should contemplate assets, machinery, facilities, inventory, raw materials, production per time unit, cash flow, and other such vital information. You can download a business plan checklist from internet and create your own plan, based on that model. Take your time, do it well. Perhaps you can consult an accountant about it and ask for advice.

The presentation should be neatly packed in a folder and printed in businesslike manner. Make a copy to keep at home, in case you have to hand in more than one set. Take note of the government agent you speak to and of all that is said at each interview.

The Amount

There are grants from $500 to $50,000, depending on the trade and other specifications. The main advantage is that it is not a loan, but a grant. They do not have to be repaid. Maybe after startup, you will want a loan to expand your activity, but that is a totally different matter.

Remember that the condition is that it should be a trade in great need for development. Then, you will be absolutely sure that you always have a market to sell to. It acts as insurance, so to speak. Then comes your ability to innovate, expand your business, add more and better products or services and maybe even reach other markets outside your region, once you’ve got a good name.

They will give you clear guidelines to go by. If you want funding do not deviate at all.

Know your funding source.

It will help you to know how to sound and feel in your proposal. Always back things up in fact and a clear understanding of the need for the funding.

Prepare a budget that is easy to read and clear on what it is you want to do.

Always fully explain everything that is going to cost and include other match funding from other organizations

At all cost never, ever slop together a proposal and hope for the best.

It never works and they see this right away.

Do not spend a lot of money going all out on the presentation. It almost never impresses the funding agency.

If you do not receive a federal grant. Ask in writing why. This will help you do further applications. It will help you do a better job redoing your proposal.

Never give up! If you are put on a waiting list or denied outright, don’t wait. Revamp and polish your federal government grants proposal and hand it in somewhere else. Each time your federal grant proposal gets better. You may also appeal some federal government grants agencies. This gets you into a face to face meeting with the the department head. There are two types of federal student aid grants. Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG) are federal grants reserved for those with exceptional financial need. Those who have received Pell Grants receive priority for FSEOG awards. There are a couple notable differences between the Pell Grant and FSEOG awards however. Unlike Pell Grants, the amount of your FSEOG award IS affected by other financial aid assistance you receive. Receiving other forms of financial aid can reduce your FSEOG award. Not all schools participate in the FSEOG program and, more importantly, schools that participate are awarded a “pool” of FSEOG funding each year. When all of that money has been disbursed, they will not (can not) issue any more FSEOG awards. It is imperative that you apply early for this type of grant. FSEOG awards amounts range from $100 to $4000 per year.

Exhibiting art works for the unknown or “unconnected” artist is difficult, to say the least. There are several reasons for this. First of all almost any venue for exhibition is inundated with requests for shows. Exhibition venues like galleries and museums can usually choose from not only the very best artists available, they can chose from the wealthy and the “connected” artists.

An artist who is connected has relatives or friends who sit on arts organization boards or arts group councils or own galleries or write on the arts for prestigious publications. Connected artists may know this or that head of an art institute or university art, or they have already been invested in by galleries and collectors who have real “pull.” This is a reality in almost every field. Donations from the wealthy tend to come with expectations, grants with certain limitations, etc. It’s not a good to talk about this because exhibiting artists like to feel that they have been recognized for the strength of their work, and they want the public to believe this too.

3) Retail Businesses – You talk with the owner or manager about placing you work in their spaces with contact information to your studio.

4) Restaurants and Bistros – The owner or manager may have concerns about decor, so listen up, but many cafe’s and bars like a change of scenery for their clientele.

5) Boutiques and Salons – This venue can be similar to other retail businesses with concerns for decor, but the customers of these kinds of businesses tend to be interested in art and they usually have disposable income.

6) Empty Storefront or Mall Rental Space – If you clear it with the owner or manager you can put on an event that draws attention to a space that needs to be rented – just put in your exhibit for 3 hours or 3 months, depending on the situation.

7) Restaurant Meeting – Send your email and art postcard invitations to prospective buyers to meet at a casual restaurant to see your latest work, here your brief lecture, eat together, get their invitations autographed, discuss your next project, buy . . .

School Exhibit – If you can’t get a college, then talk to a highschool about a short exhibition and talk with students interested in art. Ask the art teacher or art department.

9) Form an art club or association – You can split the costs of a rental space at a major hotel or resort at a time when it will be full of rich guests who can follow the signs to your exhibit and mingle with your invited viewers.

10) Art Fairs – Fill out the forms and submit images, then show up in your space or booth – just follow the rules of the fair. Look at art fairs and talk to art fair participant artists for tips on how, where, when.
